It’s less than one month to go until the annual knit and crochet blog week will take place. One of last year’s subjects was “crafting balance”. I was writing about my wish to give knitting another try. Well, I haven’t knitted a lace scarf, yet but at least I tried again and knitted a bi-color scarf. Yes, there are some visible errors in it but I do like the result and have worn it during the past cold days. I am currently knitting another one with different colors.

What was the difference this time? Well, I spent a Sunday afternoon in front of my computer watching a video again and again until I succeeded. I had to start about 5 times until the beginning was right. Here is the video that taught me knitting (it’s in German).
In weniger als einem Monat ist wieder die jährliche Strick- und Häkel Blog Woche. Eines der Themen im letzen Jahr war die Handarbeitsbalance. Ich schrieb über meinen Wunsch, Stricken noch mal zu versuchen. Den Traum vom Lace-Schal habe ich noch nicht verwirklicht, aber immerhin habe ich es erneut probiert und einen zweifarbigen Schal gestrickt. Klar gibt es ein paar sichtbare Fehler, aber das Endergebnis gefällt mir trotzdem und während der eisigen Tage habe ich ihn gerne getragen. Zurzeit arbeite ich an einem weiteren, zweifarbigen Schal.
Was war dieses Mal der Unterschied? Nun, ich verbrachte einen Nachmittag vor meinem Computer und schaute mir wieder und wieder ein Video an, bis es klappte. Ich musste ungefähr 5 Mal ansetzen, bis der Anfang stimmte. Das Video kannst Du Dir oben ansehen.

There were many interesting post and I found a bunch of interesting blogs I will follow. Anyway, the last subject is not sentimentality but crafting balance.
I definitely am a crocheter. I tried twice to knit, without success. My mum tried to teach me knitting but I was soon disappointed about the slow progress and stopped. A couple of years ago a dear friend tried, too but I failed with left chains. Might have been caused by the drink we enjoyed. If you are not a knitter but want to learn it; do it without Baileys; that might help.
The more blogs with knitting I read the more I think about giving it another try. I am really fascinated of lace knitting and would love to knit a lace scarf.
I am surprised how “addicted” to crochet I became. It started as fun but I learned a lot and am proud about the things I crocheted within less than a year. Sometimes on Sunday afternoon I think how nice it is that the next day is Monday and I will be sitting in the train enjoying my daily crochet hour.
I am looking forward to next year’s KCBW and am curious if I learned to knit until then.

Ist es nicht erstaunlich, wie schnell die Zeit vergeht? Dies ist der letze Beitrag der dritten Strick- und Häkel Blogwoche. Ich hoffe, ihr habt es genauso sehr genossen wie ich. Es gab viele interessante Beiträge und ich fand einige spannende Blogs, die ich weiterhin lesen werde. Wie dem auch sei, das letzte Thema ist nicht Sentimentalität, sondern Handarbeits-Balance.
Ich bin ganz bestimmt nur am Häkeln. Es gab zwei Versuche zu stricken, aber ohne Erfolg. Meine Mam versuchte es mir beizubringen, allerdings war ich schnell enttäuscht, wie langsam es voran ging und so ließ ich es wieder sein. Vor ein paar Jahren versuchte eine liebe Freundin erneut, mir stricken beizubringen, aber ich scheiterte an den linken Maschen. Das könnte am Getränk gelegen haben, das wir dabei genossen. Falls Du noch nicht stricken kannst, es aber lernen möchtest, ein Tipp: Versuche es ohne Baileys, das könnte helfen.
Je mehr Blogs mit Gestricktem ich folge, umso mehr denke ich darüber nach, einen dritten Versuch zu wagen. Ich finde Lacestricken wunderschön und würde gerne selbst einen Lace Schal stricken können.
Es überrascht mich, wie sehr Häkeln ein Lebensbestandteil geworden ist. Es fing als Spaß an, aber ich habe so viel gelernt und in noch nicht mal einem Jahr schon viel gehäkelt. Manchmal denke ich am Sonntagnachmittag daran, dass der folgende Tag Montag ist und ich dann wieder im Zug sitzen und meine tägliche Häkelstunde genießen werde.
Ich freue mich auf die Strick- und Häkelwoche im nächsten Jahr und bin gespannt, ob ich bis dahin Stricken gelernt habe.

It’s not that long ago that I re-started crocheting. I very well remember the day I tried to crochet in rounds. It took me hours and about six tries until I got it. The pattern of toilet paper topper I wanted to crochet included relief stitches, oh my goodness! I think I didn’t get it right. But I managed to finish my piece.

After some TP toppers I wanted to try socks. I haven’t had the right hook size and was surprised that the basic chain was so short. I crocheted until it was long enough and went on with the pattern. Next came back and front relief stitches for the wrist band. I nearly despaired. It took a very long time and there were some wrong stitches included but in the end I finish the wrist band and started with the sock. I preferred dc but the pattern used sc for the rest. The hook was so small that the dc weren’t higher than sc. After some rounds I had the feeling that it would never come to an end and stopped thinking to crochet it again but with the right hook. It is still an unfinished project and you can see it in my video of the crochet hymn. When I took it out of the box for the photo session I thought about finishing it. The dc are tiny but also very accurate. It would be a shame not to finish it off.

I learned the hard way to crochet relief stitches but like them a lot. They look like knitted. I made up a pattern for a hat using only relief stitches. It is very cozy, depending on the yarn. The warmest needed 200 g of wool.
I read more and more blogs and the bloggers come from all over the world. I began to work with their patterns and have crocheted with patterns in German, English and Dutch. I really am proud of my language skills and am currently using more English patterns. One year ago these patterns scared me.
Another thing I am very proud of are the items I crocheted without a pattern like the funny pillow, the flower TP topper, the relief stitches hats and of course the motorbike tank cover.
But I think there is always place for improvement.

Es ist noch nicht lange her, dass ich wieder mit Häkeln angefangen habe. Ich erinnere mich noch sehr genau an den Tag, als ich versuchte, in Runden zu häkeln. Es dauerte Stunden und etwa sechs Versuche, bis ich es heraus hatte. Die Anleitung für den Klopapierhut, die ich benutzen wollte, verlangte in einer Runde Reliefstäbchen, ach Du meine Güte! Ich denke, ich habe sie nicht richtig hinbekommen, aber es gelang mir, den Hut zu vollenden. Nach ein paar Klohüten wollte ich Socken häkeln. Ich hatte nicht die richtige Nadel zur Hand und wunderte mich, dass die Luftmaschenschlange so kurz war. Ich häkelte weiter, bis die Kette lang genug war und folgte weiter der Anleitung. Als nächstes sollten vorne und hinten gestochene Reliefstäbchen für das Bündchen gehäkelt werden. Daran bin ich fast verzweifelt. Es dauerte sehr lange und ein paar falsche Stäbchen sind dabei, aber das Bündchen wurde fertig. Den nächsten Teil sollte man in festen Maschen häkeln, wobei mir Stäbchen lieber sind. Durch die kleinere Nadel sind meine Stäbchen aber nicht größer als feste Maschen mit der richtigen Nadel. Nach ein paar Runden hatte ich das Gefühl, niemals fertig zu werden und legte die Arbeit zur Seite. Ich dachte darüber nach, mit der richtigen Nadel neu anzufangen. Die Socke ist noch immer unvollendet und ihr könnt sie im Video zu meiner Häkel-Hymne sehen. Als ich sie für die Fotos aus der Box holte, war ich von den gleichmäßigen, filigranen Stäbchen fasziniert. Es wäre schade, wenn sie nicht vollendet würde. Meine ersten Versuche mit Reliefstäbchen waren hart, aber nun mag ich sie sehr. Sie sehen aus wie gestrickte Maschen und ich habe eine Anleitung für eine Mütze nur aus Reliefstäbchen entworfen. Sie ist sehr warm und abhängig vom Garn kann man bis zu 200 g verbrauchen.
Erst las ich wenig Blogs, mittlerweile sind es einige mehr aus der ganzen Welt. Dadurch begann ich, mit den Anleitungen anderer Blogger zu arbeiten und habe nun schon nach deutschen, englischen und niederländischen Vorlagen gearbeitet. Ich bin stolz darauf und arbeite zurzeit am meisten mit englischen Vorlagen. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass es da mehr Auswahl gibt.
Eine andere Sache, auf die ich sehr stolz bin, sind die Teile, für die ich keine Anleitung hatte. Zum Beispiel der Blumen-Klohut, das lustige Kissen und natürlich der Motorrad Tankschutz.
Aber ich denke auch, dass es stets Raum für Verbesserung gibt.

I started to crochet in the summer and my first items were toilet paper hats.
Soon, I began to crochet beanies for myself and some friends. A scarf and mittens followed. I would say I was well prepared for the cold winter ;-) A bolero and two granny shrugs were finished in the winter and have been worn while it was cold.
Currently, I am busy finishing my cape and my “remaining skeins jacket”. Both are useful in the winter as well as on chilly summer nights. I would love to have my crochet dress ready in the summer but I haven’t even bought the wool.
It seems that I crochet small things like hats when I need them but also crochet bigger things to have them ready in the appropriate season. I would love to crochet more for charity but want to finish my ongoing projects first. Take a look at the Poekie project. It is amazing how much energy this woman puts into the project while she takes care of her sick kid. As soon as my cape is finished I will start crocheting for Poekie, independent of all seasons.
Ich begann im Sommer zu häkeln und meine ersten Objekte waren Toilettenpapierhüte. Bald darauf entstanden Beanie-Mützen für mich und Freunde. Dazu kamen noch ein Schal und Pulswärmer. Im Herbst war ich gut vorbereitet für den anstehenden Winter. Ein Bolero und zwei Granny Shrugs sprangen mir ebenfalls von der Nadel und konnten im Winter getragen werden.
Zurzeit bin ich damit beschäftigt, mein Cape und die Reste-Jacke zum Ende zu bringen. Beide sind im Winter, aber auch an kühlen Sommerabenden nützlich. Ich würde gerne das Häkelkleid im Sommer fertig haben, aber bis jetzt habe ich noch nicht mal die Wolle gekauft.
Ich habe den Eindruck, dass ich kleine Dinge wie Mützen dann häkele, wenn man sie gebrauchen kann und größere Projekte so plane, dass sie dann fertig werden, wenn sie anschließend auch genutzt werden können. Ich würde gerne mehr für wohltätige Zwecke häkeln. Schaut euch mal das Poekie-Projekt an. Ich finde es bewundernswert, wie viel Energie die Initiatorin für das projekt aufbringt, obwohl sie sich auch noch um ein krankes Kind kümmern muss. Sobald mein Cape fertig ist, werde ich für dieses Projekt zur Nadel greifen, unabhängig von den Jahreszeiten.

My post is a very personal one. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to digitalize a picture of my crochet hero but I hope you will enjoy my post without a picture, too.
There is only one person who can be my crochet hero – my grandma.
I often watched her crocheting e.g. clothes for my dolls and some day I asked her to teach me how to crochet. I learned all the basics but unfortunately never crocheted something “real” like a skirt for my dolls with her.
I’ve never forgot the basics although I hardly used my knowledge during the past few years. I just didn’t know what to crochet.
One year ago at the funny garden party where I was told that someone followed a car because of the crocheted toilet paper hat (made by Gran) I refreshed my knowledge and started to crochet “real” things. I had to learn a lot like crochet in circles but the basics I have learned from my Gran helped me to understand the patterns.
I don't know where this "crochet journey" will take me to but it always brings back the memories of the wonderful time I had with my grandparents. One legendary sentence of me as a little kid was "Grandma, get your sewing machine ready, it's going to be cosy".
I am sure that she is sitting on her cloud looking down on me laughing and proudly smiling about the (sometimes crazy) things I have crocheted within the past ten months.

Heute ist bereits der dritte Tag der Strick- und Häkelblogwoche. An diesem Tag geht es um ein Handarbeitsvorbild. Das kann jeder sein. Ein Designer, Verwandte, Freunde, etc.
mein Beitrag ist sehr persönlich. Leider habe ich es nicht geschafft, ein Foto meines "Häkelheldes" zu digitalisieren, aber ich hoffe, dass euch mein Beitrag auch ohne Foto gefallen wird.
Es gibt nur eine Person, die mein Häkelheld sein kann – meine Oma.
Ich habe ihr oft zugesehen, wenn sie häkelte, zum Beispiel Kleider für meine Puppen. Irgendwann bat ich sie, mir auch das Häkeln beizubringen. Ich lernte alle Grundmaschen, aber leider habe ich mit ihr nie etwas „Richtiges“ gehäkelt, wie etwa einen Rock für meine Puppe.
Die Grundlagen habe ich nie vergessen, obwohl ich die Kenntnisse in den letzen Jahren kaum angewendet habe. Ich wusste einfach nicht, was ich hätte häkeln sollen.
Vor einem Jahr, während der lustigen Gartenfeier, auf der mir erzählt wurde, dass jemand einem Auto hinterher rannte und das nur wegen dem Klorollenhut (gefertigt von meiner Oma) auf der Hutablage, beschloss ich, meine Häkelkenntnisse wieder aufzufrischen. Ich begann, „richtige“ Dinge zu häkeln. Es gab viel, das ich lernen musste, wie häkeln in Runden, aber die von meiner Oma erlernten Grundkenntnisse halfen mir, die Anleitungen zu verstehen.
Ich weiß nicht, wo mich meine "Häkelreise" noch hinführen wird, aber sie bringt immer wieder die Erinnerungen and die wundervolle Zeit zurück, die ich mit meinen Großeltern hatte. Ein legendärer Satz von mir als Kleinkind war "Omi, hol die Nähmaschine raus, wir machen es uns jetzt gemütlich!".
Ich bin mir sicher, dass sie lachend auf ihrer Wolke sitzt und stolz lächelnd auf mich und die (manchmal verrückten) Sachen, die ich in den letzen Monaten gehäkelt habe, herabsieht.
Dieser Beitrag ist für meine geliebte und wundervolle Oma bestimmt.

Tag der fotographischen Herausforderung
Es geht darum, eine Geschichte um etwas herum zu konstruieren, dass mit der eigenen Handarbeit zu tun hat. Beispielsweise ein Mädchen mit einem roten Cape und einem Korb voll gehäkelter Kleinigkeiten im Wald oder eine handgemachte Blume im eigenen Blumenbeet.
